Making transfers more reliable

Scope & contribution

I led the end-to-end redesign of the account transfer experience over three months, owning everything from user research and interaction design to prototyping. I partnered closely with product and engineering throughout the process to create the money movement tools and visibility advisors needed to better serve their clients.

PROBLEM

Transferring money was one of the biggest pain points for advisors at Altruist, with nearly 1 in 15 transfers failing. Financial advisors often had to chase clients for approvals, all while having very little visibility into what was happening. It created unnecessary work, tax risk, and a frustrating experience for everyone involved.

"Since I don't know the status of most transfers, I have no way making a real financial plan with my clients, which is what they hired me for."

Helping advisors stay on top of retirement activity

Advisors had zero visibility into retirement contributions and distributions, making tax season and client conversations more stressful than they needed to be. We designed a solution that made retirement activity easy to manage, helping advisors stay proactive.

Reducing transfer failures and friction

We redesigned the transfer flow to make moving money simpler and more transparent. Advisors could now handle both full and partial transfers, quickly find commonly used institutions, and track each transfer from start to finish. We also introduced one-time authorization for recurring transfers, reducing manual work for advisors and their clients.

"If I don't know the status of something and my client asks about it, it makes me look really bad."

A better way to move money

By simplifying complex transfer workflows and improving transparency, we helped advisors spend less time managing administrative tasks and more time focused on serving their clients.

"I haven't had a transfer fail in months and, more importantly, my clients are way more hands-off now."

Special thanks

Though I focused on my role, this project wouldn't have been possible without an amazing team behind it. Special thanks to my design, product, and engineering partners: Julia Kim, Rob Manukyan, Ellie Kibbe, Rachel Brown, Matt Zelazo, Igor Tseluiko, Dmytro Lytvynenko, and Seaver Lam.
